London Pie & Mash Shops
|
Visiting London in a couple of weeks and fancy a P&M. Unfortunately literally all the ones I used to go in seem to have shut down over the past few years.
Googling seems very unreliable, throwing up loads of outdated info, and a Time Out article from less than 12 months ago contains 2 which were closed last time I was in town.
Preferably quite central (staying in the West end). Seems there's a Cookes in Hoxton but hoping it's not presenting itself as a hipster gluten free type place?
Thanks in advance, any info appreciated, yfc, discuss etc. Thanks

I vaguely remember a saveloy & pease pudding stall in Leyton opposite the old bus garage as a kid. I know my old nan was a fan, so it must have been quite popular back in the day.

Question for some of the older boys on here - wad Pease pudding and saveloys more popular years ago? I ask because Lionel Bart (born in stepney) put them into Food Glorious Food and you've got that remaining outpost on Chris street and I used to get fed the stuff every week with ham as a kid.

Maureen's doesn't do the Savloy and Pease Pudding in Chrisp St, it's Ivy's cafe that does that.

Wansteadman is right it was at Bow Church. I was home in April and wanted P&M and was taken to one in Hornchurch,it was terrible so if anyone is thinking of going there - don't!

Noted Pie and Eels in Leytonstone.....£5 for a double double. I believe it used to be Georges of Canning Town.
One thing I want to try is the saveloy and pease pudding at Maureens.

mashed in maryland 2:50 Fri Aug 18 Re: London Pie & Mash Shops Anyone been to "Cockneys" in Ladbroke Grove? The name puts me off a bit but it's closer to the hotel and sites than anywhere else. ____ its great - real old school pie n mash shop. Huge vat Of mash on the go - salt of the earth types both sides of the counter. Alot of qpr go there now that cookes has shut - that place was pretty awesome and had a great history with The Who and all http://www.getwestlondon.co.uk/news/business/end-era-pie-shop-closes-9739495
Now of course the winds of change in the area with everywhere becoming a fucking fabric shop or bush meat ( geddit?±) parlour followed by gentrification means theyve gone forever
